About 10,000 years ago an Elven empire spread across Arden, with its capital being the mythical city of Vengii. It is said that they brought their city down from the heavens, its crystal towers radiant like jewels. They brought the light of civilization to the scattered races of Arden, teaching them art, writing, music and spellcraft. This culture lasted for 3,000 years, and under the leadership of the High Elves, many other races flourished and lived together in relative peace. Humans, Dwarves, Gnomes, Kobolds, Goblinoids, Orcs, Orges, Lizardfolk, Giants, Dragons and Centaurs all lived under the Code of Elven Law, known as the Eldar Tellurian. Tellurian Law forms the basis of many of the laws still used in Arden today.
This system collapsed when the City of Vengii was gripped with a bloody civil war known as the Kinslayer War, which saw the rise of the Dark Elves. These rebels tried to take control of the capitol, intent on rejecting the Tellurian in favour of direct Elven rule over all Arden. They attempted to assassinate the Royal Family, but were foiled and exiled from Vengii.
Weakened and disillusioned, the remaining High Elves used their power to pluck Vengii up and send it back up into the heavens, its sparkling towers never again to be tainted with blood spilled in war. Some say that it can now be seen as the star Eldaril, that guides travellers. Other say that the elves have not abandoned Arden, and they have kept Vengii hidden, sending out agents to do their work in secret. As a result, many other races distrust the elves, thinking them too haughty and aloof, or worse, suspecting them of being meddling spies. |
